The Tri-Metal bearing consist of a steel back with an intermediate layer and a third layer named the overlay. This is applied over the intermediate layer. Between the intermediate layer and the overlay there is another thin layer mostly 0.000040-0.000080". This serves as a barrier preventing a diffusion of material from the overlay into the intermediate layer.
Tri-metal bearings are characterized by:
- Very good fatigue strength due to the both strong intermediate layer and hardening effect of copper in the relatively thin overlay.
- Excellent seizure resistance provided by the lead based overlay. Seizure resistance drops sharply when the overlay is removed in direct metal-to-metal contact.
- Excellent embed-ability of small dirt particles.
